Quote:Twelve MPs are appealing for Newcastle United to reconsider their decision to change the name of St James' Park, calling it "corporate vandalism".

The group signed a Commons motion, condemning the change of name in favour of the Sports Direct Arena.

It says it "deeply regrets" the decision to rebrand the ground and are urging the club to think again.

The club said the change was temporary, hoping it would "showcase" sponsorship opportunities to "interested parties".

The St James' Park signs were removed last week, but graffiti has been sprayed back onto the wall of the stadium twice, in separate instances.

David Anderson, Labour MP for Blaydon, said the club's decision was an "insult" to supporters and "disrespectful" to the region.

"They've got no interest whatsoever in the ordinary football fan," he said.

"They are ignoring the people who have made this the club what it is, who spent more than 100 years building this club up into an icon for our region.

The St James' Park signs were removed from the ground last week
"It is total disrespect for the history and culture of our region."

The motion has been signed by Labour MPs Ian Mearns, Pat Glass, Catherine McKinnell, Chi Onwurah, Nick Brown, Ian Lavery, Dennis Skinner, David Anderson, Mary Glindon, Stephen Hepburn, Alex Cunningham and Sir Alan Meale.

When the club announced the name change last November - Sports Direct is the company of club owner Mike Ashley - Newcastle United fans labelled it a "disgrace", with most refusing to use the new name.

Newcastle City Council backed fans and asked local media organisations not to recognise the Sports Direct Arena name.

The authority has also agreed a motion, stating it has no plans to change any direction signs which bear the name St James' Park.

The club has not commented on the motion by MPs.

Quote:A Newcastle United fan has admitted painting the words "St James" on a wall at the club's ground.

Hours after the St James' Park sign was removed, Michael Atkinson, of Newbiggin Hall, said he had decided to go to the ground to paint the name back on.

He said he was angry that owner Mike Ashley had changed the stadium's name to the Sports Direct Arena.

Mr Atkinson, 29 has been charged with criminal damage and is due before Newcastle magistrates on 7 March.

The old sign was removed by a club worker with a crow bar on Thursday afternoon and Mr Atkinson said he had painted the words St James in white paint in the early hours of Friday.

'Blue lights flashing'
The graffiti was cleaned off on Friday morning. He said: "I was having a laugh with me mates on Facebook and decided to paint St James' on the wall.

"I had just done the St James and was just about to do the apostrophe when I saw the blue lights flashing so obviously I had to quit.

"The police were OK when they arrested me but obviously they cannot condone it.

Michael Atkinson said the name change from St James' Park "wound him up"
"The ground has always been St James' Park and should always be St James'."

Many Newcastle fans say they will continue to call the ground St James' Park.

The club said the change was a temporary measure to "showcase" the sponsorship opportunity to "interested parties".

Managing director Derek Llambias has said stadium rebranding could generate up to £10m a year.

Mr Atkinson added: "I don't understand why he [Mike Ashley] has just pulled the sign off now when he changed the name in November.

"He seems to just like winding the fans up - every time we are doing well he seems to do something to wind us up."

Quote:Several Wigan Athletic supporters have been told they are "no longer welcome" at the club after a flare was let off during a derby match with Bolton.

A 16-year-old was charged with possession of a flare after the device was ignited during Saturday's game at Bolton's Reebok stadium.

Sixteen others were also arrested or cautioned for anti-social behaviour.

The club has written to all 17 to inform them they will not be allowed at future matches.

Wigan chief executive Jonathan Jackson said the club was working with Greater Manchester Police to secure football banning orders against the majority of those involved with the incidents.

He said the club was "extremely disappointed by the behaviour of a small minority of spectators who tarnished what was a fantastic day".

He said Wigan were keen to maintain their record of good behaviour as "prior to Saturday's game, only three Wigan fans had been arrested this season".

"We wish to protect the image of Wigan Athletic as a family club and do not welcome those who seek to make trouble and endanger the safety of our supporters," he added.

Sgt John Clee said disorder at football matches was "simply not acceptable and we will look to take action against anyone that flouts this rule".

That's fucked up. Written to by the club to tell them they're not welcome after ONLY being cautioned or arrested. They've not yet been CHARGED. They've not had a fair trial in a court of law. Some may not even get banning orders but yet they'll still be banned from Wigan.
Supporters being fucked over by their own club when they've not even been found guilty of anything. 100% WRONG and I hope they challenge it to the bitter end to get it overturned.

Quote:IT was a case of who stole all the pies at Woking Football Club last week after thieves broke in and helped themselves to a mobile burger van parked up at the ground.

The mobile catering unit, named Striker Bites, is usually situated behind the turnstiles but club officials were dismayed to find it missing when they opened up at Kingfield on Thursday last week (February 2).

Peter Jordan, operations director at Woking FC, was disappointed at the theft of the vehicle, which he said was worth around £20,000.

He said: “They broke in through the gates and cut the locks and stole the van. It looks like they used a cutter to get through the lock.”

The van, fully-equipped with catering equipment which was also taken, is provided by a third party company.

A spokesman for Surrey Police confirmed the theft, adding: “We did receive a report that a wheeled catering trailer was stolen from the grounds last week between 5pm on Wednesday, February 1 and 7.30am on Thursday, February 2.

“The trailer is white and has damage to one of its rear lights and enquiries to locate it are ongoing.”

Anyone with information relating to the theft is asked to contact Surrey Police on 101, quoting reference WK/12/649, or call Crimestoppers anonymously and free of charge on 0800 555 111.

Only an Aussie could pull this one off ! A true story from Mount Isa in Queensland ..

Recently a routine Police patrol car parked outside a local neighbourhood pub late in the evening. The officer noticed a man (Luke Sandery) leaving the bar so intoxicated that he could barely walk.

The man stumbled around the car park for a few minutes, with the officer quietly observing. After what seemed an eternity and trying his keys on five vehicles. The man managed to find his car, which he fell into. He was there for a few minutes as a number of other patrons left the bar and drove off. Finally he started the car, switched the wipers on and off (it was a fine dry night). Then flicked the indicators on, then off, tooted the horn and then switched on the lights.

He moved the vehicle forward a few metres, reversed a little and then remained stationary for a few more minutes as some more vehicles left. At last he pulled out of the car park and started to drive slowly down the road. The Police officer, having patiently waited all this time, now started up the patrol car, put on the flashing lights, pulled the man over and carried out a breathalyser test.

To his amazement the breathalyser indicated no evidence of the man's intoxication.

The Police officer said "I'll have to ask you to accompany me to the Police station - this breathalyser equipment must be broken."

"I doubt it," said the man, "tonight I'm the designated decoy".

Well we had some sad news recently when one of the main members of our fan club comitted suicide. Andy had a bar in Playa de Las Americas (The Royal Oak) and it used to be one of the meeting points for our fan group of CD Tenerife "Armada Sur" (South Army). Most of us are ex-pat residents living in the south of Tenerife.
At the first match since Andy´s death the local Canarian fans rallied round. Hundreds marched to our square where we meet before Tenerife matches in the capital, chanting his name and wearing special t-shirts made for the occasion. At the game a flag/tifo was made(see pic) and on 15 minutes most of the 10,000 crowd present at the game took part in a minutes applause.

The end of the match was like a dream. Local player Pablo Sicilia scored the winning goal in the last minute with a diving header against big rivals Albacete. The game finished in a 2-1 win and the player ran straight to our end, jumped the barrier and gave his match shirt to the mother of Andy(his whole family were in the stand). Emotional stuff for even the hardened hooligan. Tenerife now play in the third tier of Spanish football. The loyal fans have stuck with it and last weeekend our attendance was higher than any at our level, all 2nd division and even more than three La Liga games(including Getafe v Real Madrid!).
